Homeward Bound

So many excellent things happened over the past few days that it’s going to be hard to recap it all, but I’ll do my best. First, we’re back home now! Well, actually, that didn’t come first at all. I guess that since I said it first it made sense to preface it with the word itself, but it actually came quite a bit later. But, if you think about it, it would have sounded strange if I started this post with Later at the beginning of the sentence, having not fully established what came before it. It would have made this post much more confusing than it should be, for which I’m glad we were able to avoid such a mess.

So where did I leave off? Let’s travel back in time a few days. On Monday we got fantastic news that the mass was shrinking and Sara was on the mend. Since then Sara has been in a similar state physically and mentally, but slowly she is recovering from round one of chemo. She’s doing everything on her own, except administering her medications (still my job) and cooking for herself. Also, I have added full time bottle/jar/can opener to my employment contract. We were actually good to come home on Tuesday, but they were taking her off two or three of her medications (don’t ask me what they were, what they did or how to pronounce them, I just work here) and we didn’t want to risk her reacting violently to them (she didn’t). So we were discharged yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon and we spent the rest of the day at home.

I cannot describe to you the joy that it brought us to be back at home. After two weeks I was able to sleep in the same bed as my wife, hug my wife, brush my teeth next to my wife, actually, come to think of it, a lot of “little things” that you don’t normally realize that you do all the time together. They say to make sure you stop and smell the roses every once in a while, and Sara and I have had the unique opportunity to do only that for the past 24 hours. It’s wonderful, I highly recommend that you try it out.

Today we had an appointment with her oncologist and he took her off two more of her medications. In fact, as we left the office today both nurses remarked at how well Sara was doing. They say that it was very unusual for someone to go through that much chemo (6 days total) and within 5 days of finishing it to be walking on her own and speaking coherently. They said she must have been in “very good shape” before going through chemo. We’ll be talking more about that in days to come.

But for now we are thankful to be home and with each other. I’ve been making dinner, last night a chicken stir fry and tonight salmon and rice, but I’m going to get very tired of it while balancing all of my new duties. Many of you have been asking if you can make meals for us, and the answer is figuratively “yes,” but not for a few more days until Sara’s white blood cell count is up (it’s at about 0.6, and 4 is average). That number represents the strength of her immune system, so basically she doesn’t have one right now. So we welcome your help as soon as it’s safe 🙂

That’s all I have for now, our next appointment is on Monday and at the moment we’re just trying to recover and get strong again so that we can withstand round two. I can’t even begin to think about round two, and I’m sure Sara can’t imagine it either, so please continue to pray for her strength and the healing of her body and mind. Thank you for your continued support. We wouldn’t be in this wonderful place if it weren’t for you.
